Kids of all ages will enjoy this delightful healthy salad. This salad is sure to be a favorite at any barbecue or summer gathering, delighting guests of all ages with its creativity, health benefits, and delicious taste. It embodies the spirit of summer fun (and shark week) while also promoting a nutritious lifestyle, making it a perfect choice for family gatherings, picnics, or casual outdoor events.

Ingredients

  • 1 large seedless watermelon

  • 2 cups mixed fresh fruit (such as blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, grapes, or kiwi)

  • 1 pint fresh blueberries (for “water” around the shark)

  • 1 small apple (for the shark’s teeth)

  • 2 black grapes or blueberries (for eyes)

  • Toothpicks

 Instructions

  1. Carve the shark:

    • Cut a small slice off the bottom of the watermelon so it sits flat.

    • On one end, cut a large wedge to create the “mouth.”

    • Scoop out the red flesh with a melon baller or spoon — save it for the salad!

    • Use a paring knife to shape jagged “teeth” along the mouth edge using pieces of the apple (cut thin wedges and secure them with toothpicks).

  2. Make the eyes:

    • Use blueberries or black grapes for the eyes. Secure them with toothpicks.

  3. Fill the shark:

    • Mix your watermelon balls and other fruit together, then spoon the mixture into the shark’s mouth and around the base.

    • Scatter extra blueberries around the base to look like “ocean water.”

  4. Chill & serve:

    • Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve cold for best flavor!
